Solar, wind and green hydrogen in the Chinese context
Course Overview
This course develops in depth the renewable technologies that underpin China’s energy transition: solar photovoltaic (utility-scale and distributed), wind power (onshore and offshore), energy storage, green hydrogen and the grid infrastructure (UHV) that integrates the entire system. China is not only the world’s largest renewable market but also the technological supplier on which the global transition relies, controlling more than 80% of solar panel manufacturing, 60% of wind turbines, 60% of electrolysers and 75% of battery production worldwide.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the current Chinese energy mix, its recent evolution and planned trajectories for 2026-2035.
- Understand the basic technical principles of solar PV, wind (onshore and offshore), storage and green hydrogen technologies.
- Analyse the Chinese industrial value chain in each renewable technology and identify the competitive position of leading Chinese players against Western counterparts.
- Assess the challenges of integrating renewables into the Chinese grid (intermittency, curtailment, UHV infrastructure, unified power market).
- Identify market opportunities, investment trends 2026-2030 and potential areas for cooperation or competition with Chinese industry from an international operators perspective.
