Environmental Risk Management and ESG Reporting

Bridging global and Chinese sustainability frameworks

70 hours 9 units

Course Overview

This course addresses environmental risk management and ESG reporting under international standards, with a focus on the convergence and divergence between the emerging Chinese system (CSDS) and consolidated international frameworks (ISSB, GRI, ESRS post-Omnibus). ESG reporting has moved from voluntary practice to a regulated obligation in major jurisdictions: the EU with CSRD/ESRS (modified by Omnibus I, in force from 18 March 2026), China with CSDS Basic Standards (published 17 December 2024) and stock exchange guidelines (first mandatory FY 2025 report due before 30 April 2026 for 457 companies representing two thirds of national emissions), Hong Kong with HKFRS S1/S2 (in force from 1 August 2025), and a growing number of jurisdictions adopting ISSB IFRS S1/S2.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the key concepts of environmental risk, TCFD typologies (physical and transition risks) and the structure of the ESG framework as a corporate management system.
  • Apply the double materiality principle and distinguish it from financial materiality; understand risk assessment methods and climate stress testing.
  • Master the main international reporting standards: GRI, ISSB IFRS S1 and S2, ESRS post-Omnibus, TCFD and TNFD.
  • Interpret and apply the Chinese CSDS system: Basic Standards, CSDS No. 1 Climate, Application Guidance and 2024-2030 roadmap.
  • Understand the ESG guidelines of the Chinese stock exchanges and the requirements for the first mandatory reporting cycle (FY 2025 before 30 April 2026).
  • Design and implement an environmental risk management process: mapping, scenario analysis, KPIs and climate transition plans aligned with NDCs and the Paris Agreement.
  • Manage convergence and multi-jurisdictional compliance (CSDS / ISSB / ESRS) and the challenges of overseas activities.
